Patagonia Project

Our aim is to support Mapuche communities to improve resilience of their farming systems to climate change.

Funding
NZD $244,000

Countries
Chile and Argentina

Partners
Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA) and FONTAGRO

The project will promote innovations in five Mapuche communities in Argentina and Chile.
It will also:

  • Improve Mapuche production and the adaptation of their systems to climate change.

  • Extend the experience to other communities that can appropriate the innovations generated.

  • Generate a regional platform for the exchange of experiences.

  • Measure baseline greenhouses gas emissions from improved production systems

The proposal was principally developed by INTA-Bariloche with input from Fontagro and New Zealand.

And a first get-to-know you meeting took place in April 2023 on Mapuche lands in the South American Patagonia region, between the communities and a NZ delegation. As of Apr 2024, Proposal approved, contracting underway.
