South Africa Project
Timeframe
October 2021 to December 2024
Context
Agriculture, forestry, and fisheries are important economic sectors in South Africa.
The impacts of Climate change are already felt, with South Africa’s average temperature increasing at a rate of more than twice that of the global average.
South Africa’s NDC commits to a fixed target for GHG emission levels of 398–510 MtCO2e by 2025, 350–420 MtCO2e by 2030, and net zero emissions by 2050. South Africa’s agricultural priority is on adaptation and implementation of a climate-smart agriculture framework.
The NZCSA initiative has established the Southern Africa Regional Measurement Hub, with equipment and technical expertise for measuring emissions from livestock and from manure. Research is funded to improve livestock production and forages that offer environmental benefits and reduce reliance on in-feed antibiotics. NZCSA projects help enhance the accuracy of emissions estimates and improve inventory management.
Impact
The Southern Africa regional Measurement Hub has boosted the capability of South Africa and others in the region to estimate emissions from their livestock breeds and farm systems more accurately.
The Hub provides both equipment and expertise on emissions measurement and supports the sharing of information and experience in the region to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
